Madelyn Logan
After receiving my undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of Mississippi, I attended the Master’s in biomedical sciences program at UMMC. It was there that I became interested in research as a career. I volunteered in Dr. Michael Hebert’s lab and eventually worked with him as a research technician before enrolling in graduate school at UMMC. During graduate school, my research with Dr. Hebert was focused on studying non-coding RNA and a sub-nuclear structure, the Cajal Body. Under Dr. Hebert’s guidance, I became well trained in cellular biology and developed a project that bridged multiple scientific disciplines by investigating the Cajal Body’s regulatory impact in preeclampsia. Upon completion of my doctoral studies, I accepted a postdoctoral position in Dr. Yann Gibert’s lab in 2022. His lab uses danio rerio as a vertebrate model to study metabolic genetic diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Joining his lab gave me an opportunity to continue my training in cell biology and genetics, as my project involves creating novel genetic mutants by CRISPR/cas to investigate biliverdin reductase’s role in fetal hyperglycemia. My immediate goal is to secure a T32 postdoctoral fellowship to continue on the path to a career as an independent researcher, using cell biology techniques to study mechanisms underpinning cellular function and disease.
